Three-year-old Fastnet Rock gelding California Nike made a fantastic winning debut in the Metroll Maiden Handicap (1150m) at Newcastle (Beaumont) on August 6 to set Snowden Racing up with a winning double following Tycoon Tara’s Missile Stakes win at Randwick.
After settling well just off the pace, apprentice jockey Nick Heywood cuddled the big striding juvenile along the rail in third position until he instigated a winning move at the 200 metre mark by coming off the rail in to the middle part of the track, where California Nike continued his run on superior ground to snare Sinopia by 0.8 of a length.
“He’s all legs this fellow. He's taken a bit of time to come to hand but he’s now putting it all together and hit the line really well,” said co-trainer Paul Snowden.
“He showed tenacity to come off the rail to the centre of the track, pick himself up again and see it through. That was a smart move by Nick and I think there are more wins in store.”
By Fastnet Rock out of star New Zealand mare Anabandana (Anabaa) who most notably raced to Group 1 victories in the Diamond Stakes (1200m) and NZ Sires’ Produce (1400m), California Nike is one win from one start for owner Mr Howard Liang.
