Calanda landed a narrow but determined victory in the $150,000 Listed De Bortoli Wines Takeover Target Stakes (1200m) at Gosford on January 11 to bring his careering earnings well over the half million mark.
Carrying the red and yellow colours of the China Horse Club and piloted by Blake Shinn, the four-year-old son of Snitzel jumped well from the wide barrier then settled comfortably midfield with cover as front runner Chetwood poured on the pace.
Shinn asked the gelding to work in to the race in the home straight where he reeled in Chetwood and duly held off a fast finishing Supreme Effort for a gusty neck victory.
Co-trainer Peter Snowden was thrilled with the effort.
“A well-timed ride there by Blake. He had the horse comfortable, in to a good rhythm, and were able to take advantage of the solid pace.
“When the other horse loomed and headed him, our bloke did not want to give up the lead and really fought back well.
“It was a determined win and great to see him respond in that fashion.”
Calanda, who also snared the Listed Ramornie Handicap at Grafton last year, has now won six races with three minor placings from just 16 career starts for connections.
