California Turbo scored an impressive first up victory to give team Snowden a winning double in the $30,000 Nationwide Super Class 1 Handicap (1300m) at Newcastle on March 22.
Following a somewhat slow getaway, California Turbo settled dead last under the expert guidance of Hugh Bowman, who didn’t panic and let the three-year-old Fastnet Rock gelding get in to rhythm.
The pair gradually came in to calculations however once a split appeared in the home straight and careered away for a dominant 1.7 length victory over Appetizing.
The win, for sole owner Howard Liang, also provided Bowman with his first win back in the saddle since he become dislodged in the Todman Stakes on March 10.
Co-trainer Peter Snowden said the lightly-raced gelding would be targeted for the Brisbane Winter Carnival.
“That was a cool ride by Hugh. We freshened this horse up for today as he wants more ground. It was good to see him stretch away like that and show a bit of dash.
“He is set for a Brisbane winter campaign, so we’ll continue with those plans and try and pick up a couple more wins along the way.
“He’s a nice progressive type.”
