Redzel has won the 2017-2018 ATC Champion Sprinter Award at the NSW Night of Champions and Randwick.
The title victory was the fourth year in a row Snowden Racing has featured since commencing operation in May 2014, taking out last year’s NSW Sprinter of the Year with Tycoon Tara, and NSW Champion 2YO with Capitalist (2016) and Pride of Dubai (2015).
Redzel went unbeaten in his first four runs of the 2017-2018 season, following maiden success in May, by winning the Group 3 Concorde Stakes (1000m) at Randwick, before he broke the course record in Group 2 The Shorts (1100m) two weeks later.
The son of Snitzel then achieved career glory in the $10 million TAB The Everest on October 14 in front of a record 33,000 racegoers at Randwick, before snaring the Group 1 Darley Classic (1200m) at Flemington.
“Richie” as he’s known around the stable, was catapulted into the top 10 prizemoney earners in Australian Racing history, with earnings now standing at $8,726,750.
“It’s an absolute honour for Paul and I to train a horse like Redzel; he’s so relaxed, tries his best every time he steps out and everyone just loves him.
“He needed to be gelded as youngster, and once that happened, he really put his mind to the job and went from strength to strength,” said co-trainer Peter Snowden.
“It’s a great testament to Chris and Michael Ward who purchased him as a yearling for a good price, and a greay bunch of owners. The rest as they say, is history.”
A $120,000 Gold Coast Magic Millions Yearling purchase, Redzel, by Champion Sire Snitzel out of Millrich (Rubiton) was an orphan foal following Millrich’s death three weeks after giving birth, so we celebrate not only his remarkable achievements, but a story of survival.
