Quinn continues the family tradition

Apr 29, 2019

Having grown up around horses and racing it was inevitable that Tom Quinn would pursue a career in the thoroughbred industry. Still a fairly new member of the Snowden Racing team, so why not get to know him a bit better with a quick Q&A.

Where were you born and raised?

I was born and raised in Port Macquarie on the Mid North Coast of New South Wales.

How long have you been a part of the Snowden Racing team?

About 10 months now, having started mid last year. Peter and Paul have known me since I was a kid as my dad, Marc Quinn, worked for Peter in the past.

How did you get involved in racing?

I’ve been involved in racing pretty much from the day I was born. Dad is a trainer in Port Macquarie, and his dad Pat Quinn was also a horse trainer. My first stable job was with my stepdad Barry Lockwood in his Brisbane stable. Baz had me doing stuff like digging out the boxes but also strapping from time to time, learning the basics. I also worked for a few trainers at Eagle Farm such as Steve O’Dea, Desleigh Forster and Tony Gollan. I gained a lot of experience and knowledge while working part time and casual in Queensland.

What do you enjoy most about working in horse racing?

I really like working with the horse’s day in and day out and the fact that the contacts you make in this industry last forever.

What do you enjoy most about working at Snowden Racing?

So far, I’ve loved every minute working for Peter and Paul. We have a really good team of horses and staff at the moment. It’s a real team effort where everyone gets in and has a go.

What is your favourite racehorse ?

Black Caviar.

What are your ambitions in racing?

If my dad had a big enough team I’d really like to go into partnership with him, but before that I’d really like to go overseas and work in England for a year or two, then return to Sydney.

What do you get up to outside of work?

In the mornings, after work, I usually go straight to the gym for an hour or two, it’s my happy place. I also enjoy meeting up with mates, going to the beach and watching a movie or two.
