The Snowden’s took away the first two-year-old of the season with aplomb at Randwick on Saturday when Capitalist took the $150,000, listed Newgate Breeders’ Plate (1000m) with stablemate Detective second with both owned by the same connections.
Capitalist under Blake Shinn stalked Cohesion and James McDonald while Samadoubt and One Stryke lead the field out for the dash to the corner. The Written Tycoon colt was a little ragged on the turn but Shinn gathered him as they went over the hill.
Shinn eased the colt up to the leaders and then with 300m run he sent Capitalist forward and the race was over. Riding hands and heels Shinn guided Capitalist to the line with 3L to spare with the colt not tested.
Detective (Snitzel) and Hugh Bowman were second with Prized Icon (More Than Ready) and Tye Angland coming home well for third, the margin 1/2L. Cohesion was fourth.
The time was 57.09 on the Good 3 track with the final 600m in 34.20. Capitalist paid $1.60 on NSW tote and $1.65 on fixed odds.
“I am really happy with that result. It is a brand new set of owners, brand new colours and a terrific result,” said Peter Snowden.
“I think you can get excited about the winner with both horses above average. That was very professional. He got into a bit of a scrimmage at the 600m, but he balanced up again and he travelled like a winner a long way out and he put paid to them without any pressure whatsoever,” he said.
Snowden said that the $2m Magic Millions 2YO Classic (1200m) at the Gold Coast on January 9th will be the target for Capitalist.
“It is just good to have a horse with that much ability as you have options,” he said.
“He is a pretty push button horse and he has been very well educated by Peter and Paul and he has loads of ability,” said Shinn.
“The three picked up inside me early so I did not want to get into a speed dual and I knew he had a turn of foot so I took a sit on him. He came back under me nicely and he was there for me when I asked. He would have taken away a lot of experience from that going forward to better races I am sure, that is only going to enhance his mental side,” he said.
Capitalist, out of the Fusaichi Pegasus mare Kitalpha, was purchased by James Harron Bloodstock for $165,000 out of the draft of Daandine Pastoral Co at the 2015 Magic Millions Yearling Sale on the Gold Coast.
Harron retains a share in the colt along with the large group of connections Newgate Farm, Horse Ventures, EST E G T Bateman, Mrs B C Bateman, Doyles Breeding & Racing, Rockingham Thoroughbreds, Mr J A Ingham, Mrs F A Ingham, Love Racing, D & L Alford, Dr M A Holland, G1G Racing & Breeding and Mr D Saab.
