Charlie Boy dominant at Doomben

May 11, 2015

Jockey Blake Shinn continued his brilliant day when he completed a treble aboard Charlie Boy in the Group III BRC Sprint (1350m) at Doomben.

Shinn piloted Sadler's Lake to victory for Chris Waller in the Group III Rough Habit Plate (2000m) before teaming up with Peter and Paul Snowden to win the Listed Juanmo Stakes with I've Got The Looks.

The BRC Sprint was Charlie Boy's second run for the Snowdens after doing his previous racing in the care of Rosehill trainer Gerald Ryan.

Charlie Boy's last win was in the Group II Danehill Stakes (1200m) in Victoria during the spring of 2013 but the four-year-old still started as a $3.70 favourite.

Shinn let Charlie Boy find a rhythm midfield before the gelding dashed home smartly to beat Rock Sturdy ($9) by a half-length while Nite Rocker, who firmed from $13 into $10 on track, was third.

"He got into a lovely position but he over-raced a little bit with the blinkers on," Shinn told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

"Once he got comfortable, he travelled beautifully then got out and got in behind Hughie (Bowman on Rock Sturdy) and got into a lovely spot to pounce.

"He did a good job. He's only second-up so he's going to improve."

On-track punters backed Estonian Princess from $4.60 into $4.40 but the mare was never a threat while Gundy Spirit firmed from $12 into $9.50 before working home well to run fourth.
