I've Got The Looks leads in quinella for Team Snowden

May 11, 2015

The Peter and Paul Snowden-trained I've Got The Looks led home a stable quinella when defeating Dublin Lass to win the $100,000 Listed Juanmo Stakes (1200m) at Doomben on Saturday.

The victory gave jockey Blake Shinn an early winning double after he was successful aboard Sadler's Lake for Chris Waller in the Rough Habit Plate. The win was one Shinn will never forget for special reason.

Just shy of a year ago, Shinn partnered Streama to score Guy Walter's last Group I win in the Doomben Cup, days before the trainer lost his life when suffering a heart attack.

In the weeks following his unexpected death, Walter's wife Wendy took out her trainer's licence to keep the operation going and I've Got The Looks scored her first city winner at Rosehill in July.

"Guy used to trainer her and it's just on 12 months since he passed away," Shinn told Sky Thoroughbred Central. "To win on this day on a horse he used to train is pretty special.

"I'm sure he's looking down on me today and I'm sure Wendy's watching and I give my love to her."

Most punters all week we're in the corner of the Tony Gollan-trained Traveston Girl and she started a dominant favourite.

Traveston Girl was fired out of the barriers by Tegan Harrison and took up the running but in the straight she wasn't able to repel the finish of the Snowdens two-pronged attack on the race.

With 100 metres to run it looked like Dublin Lass would claim the spoils when she hit the front but I've Got The Looks continued to build under her 58.5kg topweight and over the latter stages reeled in her stablemate.

"She just keeps raising the bar this horse," Shinn said. "The speed was genuine, the barrier (1) was crucial to her chances, we were able to get a great drag along on the fence behind Traveston Girl.

"I was able to ride her to advance and with her turn of foot she did the rest."

I've Got The Looks ($2.80) defeated Dublin Lass ($3.70) by a short neck with Traveston Girl ($13) a long neck away in third.

The win was I've Got The Looks ninth from 19 starts and took the five-year-old daughter of Choisir's earnings to more than $400,000.
